History: The land on which “Oakfield” homestead stands is part of an early grant to Lieutenant William Lawson of Prospect. William Lawson was a significant character in the early history of New South Wales as soldier, administrator, explorer, landowner, stockbreeder and politician.

“Oakfield” homestead is built in a bungalow style which was introduced into New South Wales from India by Surgeon John Harris when he built his Experiment Farm Cottage at Parramatta in 1794. There are many variations of this style dating from the early colonial period still to be seen throughout New South Wales. The bungalow incorporated wide verandahs, often encompassing the whole building and occasionally with bell-cast rooflines over the main building and verandahs.

Although the grant for “Oakfield’” original 640 acres was issued in 1832, the grant was most probably occupied in the early 1820s. Although it is presumed that a rustic dwelling existed on the grant in the early days, the original part of the homestead probably dates from circa 1840 and perhaps even earlier. Although some of the original joinery has been removed or replaced during the course of later additions and renovations, remaining rustic doors and restrained mantelpieces suggest an earlier date.

The first occupant of “Oakfield” homestead is believed to have been Nicholas Paget Bayly, overseer of the Lawson estates in the Mudgee District. The house could well have been constructed in anticipation of his marriage in 1840 to Ellen Dickinson, a sister of the wife of Nelson Simmons Lawson. Photographs taken in the late 1870s/early 1880s by later owners, the Cox family, reveal a well-established house and gardens. The house reached its current configuration under the Cox family who added a substantial wing of three rooms to the north eastern corner of the original house.
